Social media's everywhere including IT hiring. Companies are increasingly using a mix Web 2.0 and other Internet-based tools to reach out to their prospective employees. Whether it's through blogs or newsletters or web portals, Internet is the hottest platform for HR executives.

The movement which started with Internet-based recruitments has moved much beyond. While industry readiness may be high on the agenda for most corporates, such initiatives also help in building the company's brand on campus.

TCS

TCS' e-initiative NextStep is complemented by an e-learning portal that offers an opportunity to students to connect with the company and get access to various web-based courses on software development, database management, testing, among others and offers a first-level orientation to software engineering.

According to the company, the courses provide an understanding of the software development life cycle, tools and techniques used in various phases of the development cycle.

Infosys

India's second-largest IT company Infosys Technologies, runs an initiative CampusConnect through which students can access various modules of the firm's foundation course, download projects and participate in discussions, to "get an integrated view of software engineering and IT at the end of it."

Campus Connect aims at evolving a model through which Infosys and engineering institutions can partner for better competitiveness and capitalise on the available talent pool.

Under CampusConnect, Infosys holds seminars and faculty training for colleges, which helps the faculty get an industry perspective. Tailor the college curriculum with industry requirements and work with educational bodies for implementing it.

Wipro

Last year India's third largest IT company, Wipro started a blog for students called Campusarena. Through the blog, the company aims to facilitate one-to-one interaction with the Campus Hiring Team and Wiproites to give students a sneak peek into thr everyday life, work and culture at Wipro.

Bloggers from Wipro include several senior-level managers. The blog has five sections -- Technology Trendz, Learning and Development, Health and Lifestyle, Sports and Entertainment and Fresher's Talk.

Priti Rajora, who heads the campus hiring at Wipro, said these steps enable fast-track training and induction upon joining.

Cognizant

Cognizant has exclusive blogs and networking forums for potential hires. Apart from this, with an objective to bridge the gap between the academia and industry, the company has a monthly campus newsletter titled C2C (Campus to Cognizant). C2C aims to capture the buzz in campuses while constantly tracking the rising barometer in the industry in general and Cognizant in particular.

“Apart from providing information on the campus happenings and initiatives, the portal seeks to sensitise students about industry expectations and facilitate a smooth transition from campus to corporate world,” says Cognizant vice-president (HR) Bhaskar Das.

The software major has launched a Back2Campus programme encouraging its employees to visit their respective colleges as CTS brand ambassadors to interact with students. The mission is three-fold - to look out for prospective recruits, share industry knowledge and increase their employability.

Talking to ET, CTS human resources vice president Bhaskar Das said, "Our Back2Campus is not entirely a recruitment programme. According to Nasscom, 25 per cent engineering graduates are directly employable by the IT industry and 15 per cent can be groomed to be made employable.

This is one such initiative to groom these 15 per cent graduates who can be trained to meet industry needs. By interacting with their college seniors who are working with Cognizant, students gain a better understanding of industry requirements which helps them make a smooth transition from the campus to the corporate world.

IBM employees guide students and faculty through project scenarios, solution demos and e-mentor them. This while helps the company deliver projects through the university, students on the other hand, too get certifications on IBM technologies. Also, the students who train with them generally have shorter induction programmes once they join the organisation.
